A cute memory of the city of Amsterdam - An Amsterdammertje!

These typical dark red traffic bollards with the three Amsterdam crosses on them can be found all across the city, separating the street from the pavements, protecting pedestrians and the houses. Amsterdammertjes ( meaning 'little one from Amsterdam' in Dutch) were first installed in the 1800s and were made from old canons. In 1915 they began to be made of Cast bronze, and in 1972 from steel, as it is less expensive. However as steel is much lighter than other metals, it is not a very effective vehicle deterrent. Due to this and the fact that city began to raise the side of the pavements, these bollard stopped being installed and the city started to remove thousands each year.

Don't worry though - If you really like them the actual Amsterdammertjes are up for sale!
